There are so many of us that live a busy life and can easily neglect our plants.  We set some plants, knowing that they will need to be watered in order to thrive.  What if we are away for a few days and it’s not possible to get someone in to help? Young plants need watering every day, and if we don’t nurture them at a tender age we will lose them. What about the house plants, how many of us one day realise that we have forgot to water that forlorn looking plant that’s sat in the window?  Unfortunately, statistically more plants die than survive because they are not watered enough.  Ironically enough, a lot of us can over water too and drown our plants.  How many of you knew this cool little trick using diapers that can help you water your plants?  This video was a real education to me, I was so impressed I am sharing it below.

Cool, I know!  The advantages are well worth the little bit of work that’s involved to start with.

Another cool tip is to line the bottom of your plant pots with a diaper to help retain the moisture in the soil.  The fact that they are non-toxic therefore environmentally friendly makes this project even more attractive.  It’s worth noting that

one adult sized diaper can return about 12 beakers of hydrogel. You break apart the  small pieces of cotton wadding and mix that in the bowl too.  You use multi-purpose potting soil and mix it with your diaper mix in equal parts.  You have just created a super fluffy absorbent mix that is perfect for potting or bedding your plants.

So now you know how diapers can water your plants!  You could go on to make a bigger batch and work it into your borders and raised beds.  What about your vegetable plot, I am sure you would go on to produce a bigger yield?   Remember too that the crystals will last a good few seasons.

  1. This is so stupid. It’s TERRIBLE for the environment, anyone who plays in their garden should NOT do this. Anyone who cares about the earth should NOT use this method. Gkd forbid if you grew veggies in it, I sure would never eat them. The amount of sketchy chemicals in disposable diapers alone.

  2. I have to say, my oldest wanted to know how many layers are in a diaper, I have no idea where it came from but…. We looked at one and then decided to open it and I knew that the powder in there made gel… So we emptied all the powder and added water 3 CUPS!! And probably could have added more lol the kids played in it all day lol
