Now that we are enjoying summer the next project will be ideal and will enable you to relax in your backyard. This beautiful hanging chair is made by using the ancient art of Macrame. You will love this next project as it will enable you to develop or practice  Macrame skills.  Macramé or macrame  shouldn’t be confused with knitting or weaving but is a form of textile-making using knotting. It was a craft that sailors perfected, especially in intricate and elaborate ornamental knotting forms. They used this skill to decorate anything from parts of their ship, knife handles and bottles to name but a few.



You will need:

  • 3 1 1/4-inch hardwood dowels, 30-inches long
  • 2 5/8-inch hardwood dowels, 36-inches long
  • 200 yards, 1/4-inch macrame cord or rope
  • 8 yards, 1/2-inch rope
  • 4 1-inch wood screws
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

First start with Measure the Dowels


Drill Holes in the Dowels


Sand the Holes



Slide the Dowels Together


Secure the Frame With Screws


Hang the Frame


Wrap the Cords Around the Dowel



Cross the Cords From Left to Right


Cross the Cords From Right to Left


Complete the Square Knot


Start With the Third Cord


Repeat the Pattern

As you can see the main skill of this wonderful DIY project is the clever use of knots.
